Designed by Feldman Architecture for a couple with three boys much of the residence reflects the personality of the homeowners and their desire to live in an open functional and modern setting where ergonomics are intertwined with effective design. Spread across four different levels it is the two lower floors that contain the public spaces while the third level houses the kids’ bedrooms and the master suite.
The TV room is connected with the modern sunroom using custom sliding doors that also hide away the television when not needed. This not only saves space but helps control the level of natural light that enters the TV room and the living area.
It is the lower level that houses the living areas while the top floor holds three bedrooms bathrooms and a cozy tranquil study. The original Georgian stone façade additional stone walls and the soul of the White House are carefully preserved and one can see that this is an overhaul that is sensitive to the historical context and the current needs of the project. A perfect alchemy indeed!
But the offers much more that mere aesthetics as dark floor tiles reduce the glare from the ocean and high louvres keep the interior cool in a natural fashion. Rainwater tanks capable of holding 5000l of water provide the home with almost all of its water needs while passive heating and cooling techniques cut down on energy consumption. This not only makes life at this beachside home a lot easier but also adds to its sustainability quotient.
A contemporary fireplace becomes the focal point of the conversation zone with twin leather chairs and a simple coffee table even as large windows bring in a flood of natural light. It is fun accessories throw pillows and eclectic art pieces that bring color and creativity to this exquisite loft where style meets substance.
Originally built in the 1950s the sweeping family home was subsequently altered several times resulting in changes that destroyed its beauty and played havoc with the interior space. It took a fabulous makeover from David Coleman Architecture to undo the mess!
Another highlight of the home is the office pod on the top level that seems to be draped in wood and contains plenty of storage space. Both its placement and design ensure that disturbance here is minimal even as the greenery outside and the view beyond add to its charm. Efficient and graceful this is a home that has been fashioned to meet the specific needs of its residents to absolute perfection.
